Jane strode along, lost in thought. ‘When I grew up – not far from here,’ she said, ‘I used to be jealous of kids on farms, all that quiet time, big open spaces.’

‘I was the opposite,’ Mark said, quickening his pace, taking care to skirt over fresh cow pats. ‘I felt sorry for them – all by themselves, no one to play with.’

‘Different here,’ Jane mused, her hands in her pockets. ‘Eloise had her three brothers, and two friends on the neighbouring farm.’

‘Plus her boyfriend, Brett, didn’t live too far away, just a couple of k’s to the west in Moyne Lane. She could easily have skipped across the paddocks to either of their houses.’

‘All those boys!’ Jane said. She was right, it was boy city in these parts. The three handsome Sinclair boys and the playboy Brett. And James. There was James too.

‘And Scott Boxhall lived in town,’ Mark recalled. ‘Gerri’s boyfriend and the father of her son.’

Police tape still surrounded the sinkhole, but all other evidence of the retrieval operation was gone. Mark peered into the hole. It would be so easy to miss; you’d only find it if you stumbled into or across it. Blue water shimmered, contrasting sharply with the grass around it. ‘How did they find this place?’ he asked in wonder.

‘Frank said he’d been clearing the paddocks, heard a cow mooing in distress. It looked like it was stuck in the grass. When he got there, he saw that its front leg had fallen into a hole. Got the cow out of the way, cleared the grass and found this.’

‘It’s amazing down there,’ Jane said, kneeling. ‘You can’t believe it – a whole cavern – and so beautiful. The visibility is almost perfect. In the ocean you’re excited with ten metres, but under here, you can see for at least forty.’
